If you’re not familiar with tofu, it can be a little mysterious! There’s various types of tofu and each type can require different ways of storing and preparing. On this month’s blog, we’re focusing on different types of tofu tips & tricks that will help you in the kitchen when preparing tofu.

 

Tofu taste best when it’s fresh from the package, so storing can be a little tricky! However, if you find that you have leftover tofu, you may store it in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days after opening. Since we don’t use any preservatives in our tofu, like any other fresh food product it can spoil quickly which is why it’s best to enjoy the tofu after opening the package.

 

Since there are different types of tofu, we are sharing some tips and tricks for you to store Superior Natural’s Tofu at home.

How to Store Tofu?

When storing tofu, it depends on the type of tofu as we previously mentioned.

1.     Fresh Water-Packed Tofu

If you have leftover tofu, you should store unused portions in clean water. Change the water daily to keep tofu fresh for longer.

2.     Asian Classics, Organic Extra Firm & Pressed

You should store unused portions in a resealable container or cover with plastic wrap.

3.     Soft Tofu & Soy Desserts

It’s better to store unused portions in their original container and cover with plastic wrap or transfer to a resealable container. Before storing, drain excess water, as more water will be released over time due to its high-water content.

 

As mentioned before, when refrigerated, tofu is good for approximately 3-5 days after opening.

How Do I Know if My Tofu has Spoiled?

If the tofu package is bloated, the product has spoiled. The tofu will also smell sour or fishy.

 

Different Types of Tofu and Cooking Methods.

Next, we will focus on the different types of tofu that Superior Natural offers. We including a few different cooking techniques for our various types of tofu.

 

First, we need to understand that there are different kinds of tofu which vary by firmness.

 

  1. Extra Firm & Pressed Tofu

Pressed Tofu is firmer than Extra Firm as it has most water pressed out. Generally speaking, the two types can be used interchangeably.

 

Cooking Methods: Deep fry, Stir-fry, Bake, Grill, Stew, Crumble (substitute for ground meat)

 

2. Medium Firm Tofu

Medium has a softer texture than Extra Firm but more firm than Soft.

Cooking Methods: Stir-fry, Bake, Stew, Purée, Steam, Hot Pot, Crumble

 

3. Soft & Silken Tofu

This type of tofu is not drained and pressed like other tofu. It breaks apart very easily. It is the silken and soft texture.

Cooking Methods: Purée, Steam, Soup, Stew, Hot Pot Blend into – sauces, smoothies, dips
