Superior Natural, one of the largest tofu manufacturers in Canada, is launching into US markets
Superior Natural, once a small and local store in Vancouver, Canada, has reached new heights by expanding new product lines into East Canada and US markets. With the rising trend of plant-based consumption, Superior Natural is excited to meet the demand and bring healthy options to new communities.
Superior Natural started its humble beginnings in 1982 in Vancouver, Canada. The company was founded by a Chinese immigrant family consisting of Percy Chan and his parents, Tung Lam and Sui Fong. At this time, Superior Natural was known as Superior Tofu, a manufacturer of tofu and soy drinks. In the beginning, Superior Tofu produced and sold products in a small facility. They focused on their craft by making a pure and simple product that would soon be admired by consumers throughout Western Canada.
By 2004, the Superior name was starting to become well-known throughout Western Canada with distribution in various ethnic market chains. As sales increased, the company decided to build an 18,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility with state-of-the art equipment and a SQF (Safe Quality Foods) Level 2 certification that ensured growth for the future of Superior’s products. The Superior brand offers a diverse line of plant-based products including Tofu, Soy Drink, Soy Desserts, and the addition of the Fried Bean Curd Roll item to meet consumer demands. In 2013, Superior hit another mile stone by expanding to East Coast Canada Costco stores making it a brand known throughout Canada.
In 2017, Superior Tofu joined Keystone Natural Holdings (KNH) and rebranded itself into "Superior Natural" with a fresh new logo and brand colors. KNH is known as a food industry powerhouse that manages various plant-based manufacturers in North America. Its portfolio is composed of both retail and food service channels including Superior Natural, Franklin Farms, and Nature Soy brands. Under KNH's management, all the brands' facilities were certified and ready to produce authentic, health-conscious and innovative food.
Sharing the same core values of authenticity, creativity, and sustainability, KNH serves as a great support system to Superior Natural to not only expand its product category but also thrive in both ethnic and mainstream markets across Canada. Although Superior has grown rapidly in the past years, the company remained as authentic as they were in 1982, pure and simple. From what started in a small shop in Vancouver was now a nationally recognized product for all Canadians to share. Since then, the trend of growth continued as people became more health conscious. Within the last five to ten years, cultural trends of healthy eating and living started appearing around the world.
The trend to eat right has started to move into the mainstream spotlight. Since tofu is a complete protein and entirely plant-based, emerging conscious consumers naturally started drawing more attention to these plant-based products. Sales Manager, Dan Chan, says that “based on our sales trends in the last 4-5 years, we have started to see an increase of more than 15%” and projects that the trend will only continue to grow.
Mr. Chan has been working for Superior Natural since 2015 and says that everyone loves working here. He says, “they are not only my colleagues, but they are my friends.” The Superior Natural culture stands in a professional work environment, but the connections between coworkers goes far beyond that. “I talk to the new employees and want them to be happy and to be comfortable here,” says Dan, “we have a strong social responsibility and I care about everyone. That’s what makes us a strong team.” Most importantly, everyone that works here believes that they are bringing something positive and beneficial to the communities they are serving.
Superior Natural believes in the statement, pure and simple. Mr. Chan says Superior Natural always focuses any endeavor on those words as it reflects the products they produce. Tofu is famous for its simple ingredients and that is what has caught people's attention. “I tell that to everyone,” says Dan, “tofu is not complicated, other foods are full of ingredients that people do not understand.”
Superior Natural is reaching new heights again as the company, for the first time enters the US markets slated for 2021. As the demand for organic products increase, Superior Natural is introducing a new product line which includes Organic Firm, Organic Soft, and Organic Silken Tofu to the US market this February. Meanwhile, the company is also delighted to bring more selection of tofu products to the Eastern Canada market including Medium Firm, Silken, Organic Firm, Organic Medium Firm, and Organic Silken Tofu. With 100% organic ingredients and the same authentic taste, Superior Natural upholds its commitments to providing healthy, high-quality ingredients that inspire its consumers to create more innovative recipes.
A big milestone like this is nothing unfamiliar for this company.
